Bold City Bulletin, Jan. 16: Basketball Squads Dominate Weekend Play

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- Looking to continue a hot start to conference play, the Jacksonville men's and women's basketball teams each remained undefeated in ASUN action this week, knocking off a pair of opponents.

The Bottom Line

The JU men's basketball team took down a pair of conference foes at home last week, improving to 3-0 in conference play for the first time since the 2010-11 season. In a Thursday evening matchup against Kennesaw State, the Dolphins rallied from a 12-point deficit to a take a 65-58 win, outscoring the Owls 40-26 in the second half. JU had three players in double-digit scoring, as Devin Harris, Jace Hogan, and JD Notae each put up 14 points. Harris once again came close to the team's first triple-double since 1995, adding eight rebounds and eight assists to his point total. In Saturday's game against Lipscomb, the 'Phins came out hot in the first half, shooting over 60 percent from the field and leading by 20 at the break. Four Dolphins eclipsed the 10-point mark in the contest, which saw JU win 87-69, the largest margin of victory in a conference game since 2015. The team's four-game winning streak is its longest since the 2015-16 season, when the Dolphins won five straight.

JU women's basketball also continued its conference success, rolling out to a 3-0 ASUN start by knocking off a pair of opponents at home. The Dolphins had no trouble against Lipscomb on Saturday afternoon, holding off the Bisons, 70-48. Seniors Brandi Buie and Kayla Gordon eclipsed the 1000-point mark in their careers Saturday, becoming the ninth and tenth Dolphins in history to do so. JU returned to Swisher Gym for a Monday matinee on Martin Luther King Day, hosting the Owls of Kennesaw State. The 'Phins extended their winning streak to four in the 84-49 victory, their largest of the year thus far. Four different players eclipsed double-digits, including a career-best 13 points from Alexis Burns. JU's 3-0 conference start marks the fourth time in Head Coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin's five year tenure that JU has won its first three contests to open ASUN play.

Quote of the Week

"Kudos to Kayla and Brandi, they've been so much a part of this success – they've been part of our championship team and I'm just happy they were able to get that accomplishment today. I just think that's awesome. When Coach Haney and I recruited them, we asked them to come help us build something. A championship and an at-large bid later, here we are with them doing it. It's really special to me, personally, and I know to everybody."- WBB head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin on Brandi Buie and Kayla Gordon eclipsing 1,000 points on their careers.

Women's Track & Field Gears Up For 2018 Season

Led by Head Coach Ron Grigg, the Jacksonville University women's track & field team has found unprecedented success over the last decade-and-a-half. Until last season, the program was part of an 11-year ASUN Championship run, which included 22 consecutive league titles between indoor and outdoor track. After having the streak snapped last season, the Dolphins are hungrier than ever to win, and have their sights set on a 12th league title as the 2018 spring season comes into view. The team welcomes in 10 freshman, and brings back four fifth-year-seniors that have been key parts of the team's success. Click here to read the full preview for the 2018 Track & Field Season!
