DELAND, Fla. - The Jacksonville University softball team missed getting the final spot in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament after falling to Stetson, 3-0 & 7-1, in their final doubleheader of the season on Saturday night in DeLand, Fla.
"It was a tough way to end the season," said JU head coach Melissa Gentile. "I'm really proud of the way of girls fought tonight and for the season.
In game one, the Hatters (41-13, 16-4 A-Sun) grabbed an initial 1-0 lead from a sacrifice fly by Melissa Wiggins to score Shawna Wiggs.
In the fifth inning, Wiggs and Sherrel Fountain scored on an error by senior Janine Palumbo to give the Hatters a 3-0 lead.
The Dolphins (22-37, 6-14 A-Sun) committed four errors on defense in the first game.
Hatters starter Erica Demers (24-4) earned the win by pitching a complete-game shutout and scattering four hits on six strikeouts.
JU starter Kate Dobson (9-15) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits and fanning three batters in six innings.
In game two, the Dolphins gained a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Palumbo drove in Stephanie Farabee on a double to right-center field.
In the second inning, the Hatters used a RBI single by JJ Payette and base loaded walk that scored Lindsay Wightman to get a 2-1 advantage.
Wiggins extend the lead in the fourth inning by driving in a run on an infield single off JU starter and eventual losing pitcher Katie Buell.
In the fifth inning, Teri Lake had an RBI single, while Fountain drove in three runs on a two-out triple to give the Hatters a 7-1 advantage. Heather Colding (12-4) held the Dolphins scoreless in the final two innings to earn the victory for the Hatters. Colding allowed one run on five hits in seven innings of work
Buell (2-5) allowed seven runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings in the loss. Sophomore Shannon Jensen recorded 1.2 shutout innings of relief for the Dolphins.
"Our seniors showed great leadership this season," said Gentile. "Our team also shows signs of great things to come. I am already looking forward to next year."
