JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The one-hour weather delay didn't hold the Jacksonville women's tennis team back from a strong performance.

Led by strong play in singles, the Dolphins opened the 2006 season with a 4-2 loss to Auburn on Sunday morning at the JU Tennis Center.

"I've been telling the team all during the preseason that we can win four points in every match," said JU head coach Jarod Camerota. "Now we just have to believe that we can do that after a good showing today. We have to continue to improve and get better each time out."

The Dolphins (0-1) lost the double point to Auburn to start the match. Elizabeth Styles and Keri Zwikker fell to Erin Gray and Alex Haney, 8-0, in the No. 3 double match. In the No.2 match, JU's Lena Willi and Megan Williams lost 8-6 to Dzeljan Memisi and Leigh Tippins.

Nanar Airapetian and Emese Sulyos were leading 5-4 when the match was suspended to begin singles play.

In the single play, Auburn (1-0) took the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 matches to seal the win. Williams dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision to Memisi at No.4, with Styles falling to Tippins, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 position. Zwikker lost the No.6 match, 6-0, 6-0, to Gray.

The Dolphins did pick up wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions. Sulyos knocked off Ashley Cowart, 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 1 match. That was followed by Willi knocking off Haney in a third-set tiebreak, 6-4, 1-6, 10-7.

Airapetian was leading 7-6, 3-3 when the match was suspended after Auburn had won the match.

The Dolphins return to the court on Saturday to face Savannah State at home. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
