Volleyball Shocks Samford in 3-2 Thriller

JU junior middle hitter Brooke Ahrens (Benson, Ill.) had a game-high 14 kills and sophomore outside hitter Radka Dimitrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) added 10 kills as the Dolphins beat Samford, 3-2, Saturday evening at Swisher Gymnasium in an exciting A-Sun conference matchup. The win was the biggest of the season so far for the Dolphins and improves their record to 4-10 overall and 2-1 in the A-Sun. The Bulldogs drop to 4-9 with a 0-1 A-Sun conference record.

The Dolphins jumped out to a quick 2-0 (30-19, 30-25) lead before Samford came roaring back to win game three, 30-17 and game four, 30-18. JU was able to hold off the Bulldog surge in the final game, never giving up an early lead on its way to the 15-10 game and match win.

Junior outside hitter Kristy Smith (Carleton, Mich.) contributed to the Dolphins' solid offensive attack with nine kills, while junior outside hitter Alesha Rodriguez (Cleveland, Ohio) paced the defense with 14 digs, followed by senior setter Carrie Bosworth's (Centreville, Mass.) 12 digs and Dimitrova's 10 digs. The Dolphins also garnered 12 blocks, getting two each from senior middle hitter Jacyln Buran (Milwaukee, Wisc.), Ahrens and Dimitrova.

The Dolphins look to continue their winning ways in their next outing on Friday, October 12, when they travel to Macon, Ga. to take on Mercer in an A-Sun conference battle at 7:00 p.m.
