Eva Stoilova named A-Sun Player of the Week
Nov. 7, 2005
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior outside hitter Eva Stoilova was named Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week after tallying 34 kills and 45 digs to lead the Dolphins to a 2-0 mark for the week, while also securing the No. 2 seed in the A-Sun tournament next weekend in Nashville, Tenn. She becomes the first Dolphin to earn the weekly honor since outside hitter Radka Dimitrova received the award on Oct. 8, 2003.
"Eva has been playing consistently for us all season so it's great for her to be recognized for her efforts," said JU head coach Kevin Paul. "She did a great job of picking up the extra load when we lost our other outside hitters (Joanna Silva and Petya Borisova) and I'm glad she is being rewarded for it. We are going to need the same results from her next week when we start to defend our title."
In the Dolphins' 3-1 win over Belmont, Stoilova put down 15 kills and recorded 22 digs to the clinch the second seed. Against Lipscomb, Stoilova registered 19 kills and a career-high 23 digs to hand the Bisons a 3-1 loss. The performance was even more significant due to injuries leaving the Dolphins with only seven healthy players for both matches.
Stoilova currently leads the squad with 293 kills (3.22 kpg) and 318 digs (3.49 dpg), while also ranking second with 0.30 service aces per contest. Last season, Stoilova joined former Dolphins Tara Burton (1998), Carrie Arago (1999) and Radka Dimitrova (2002, 2003) as the program's only first-team all-conference selections since JU joined the A-Sun in 1998.
After a slow 1-9 start, Jacksonville has climbed back to .500 with a 13-13 overall record and finished with an 8-1 conference mark. As the defending tournament champions, the Dolphins will be making their seventh consecutive tournament appearance. Last season, the Dolphins earned their first A-Sun Championship and the program's second bid to the NCAA Tournament (1983 - Div. II).
The Dolphins will travel to Bethune-Cookman tomorrow at 7 p.m. before ending the 2005 regular season on Friday at 7:30 p.m. against Stetson for Senior Night. Prior to the match, seniors Erin Donivan, Danielle Neville, Joanna Silva and Lindsay Ward will be honored for their contributions to the program.
