Baseball splits doubleheader with Lipscomb

After dropping a close contest in the first game of a doubleheader, the Dolphins bounced back in a big way in the night cap as the JU baseball team split with Lipscomb (7-4, 22-6), Friday afternoon at Dugan Field.

JU (20-18, 9-7) could not hold a 3-1 lead in the first game as Lipscomb (15-29, 6-11) rallied for four runs in the fourth and two runs in the sixth. The Dolphins bounced back in the second game by pounding out 21 hits while taking advantage of four Bisons errors.

“It was tough way to lose in the first game but we bounced back in a big way to even things up,” said Alexander. “Hopefully, the weather holds up tomorrow and we can go home with another win.”

In game one, junior Matt Loosen (3-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs on 11 hits with two walks and two strikeouts in five innings. Senior Kyle Kriech gave the Dolphins a chance by hurling three innings of shutout relief.

Josh Smith (3-2) got the win after allowing four runs on 10 hits while walking two and striking out 11 in the complete game.

Sophomore left fielder Jonathan Murphy led the Dolphins by going 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI while senior first baseman Alex Martinez added a two-run homer. Junior right fielder Esterlin Perozo, freshman center fielder Dan Gulbransen and junior catcher Alex Swenson also finished with multiple hits.

Logan Hostettler led the Bisons by going 3-for-4 with a home run while M.L. Williams went 3-for-3. Zach Messer sparked the LU rally by hitting a grand slam in the fourth inning.

In the night cap, JU scored 13 runs in the first three innings and never looked back as junior Matt Tomshaw (5-1) earned the win by allowing four runs on 11 hits while walking only one and striking out five in seven innings.

Davey Hackett (3-5) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 1.2 innings.

Freshman designated hitter Adam Brett Walker led the offensive barrage for the Dolphins by going 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI. Junior shortstop Jamaal Hawkins also finished 3-for-3 with four RBI while Martinez and Gulbransen each finished with three hits and three RBI. Murphy added three hits while senior second baseman Chuck Opachich added two hits and three RBI.

Messer led the Bisons by going 2-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI.
