Baseball defeats Florida A&M, 11-8
The Dolphins did what they had to do to earn a split through Tallahassee as the JU baseball team defeated Florida A&M, 11-8, Wednesday afternoon at Moore-Kittles Field.
JU (21-19) tallied at least 10 runs for the third straight game on 11 hits while taking advantage of seven errors by FAMU (10-28-1).
“This was a good opportunity for us to give guys some rest and get some people some at-bats,” said JU head coach Terry Alexander. “Now we have to get ready for an important series this weekend against Kennesaw State.”
Freshman Chris Patrick (2-0) got the win after allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts in five innings.
Kelvin Hale (0-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing eight runs (six earned) on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts in four innings.
Freshman center fielder Dan Gulbransen led the Dolphins offensively by going 4-for-6 with a double, a home run and two RBI. Freshman designated hitter Adam Brett Walker, junior catcher Alex Swenson and senior shortstop Derek Abis also finished with multiple hits.
The Rattlers were led by Darryl Evans who finished 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, a home run and two RBI.
The Dolphins took a 3-0 lead in the first when senior first baseman Alex Martinez and junior right fielder Chris Connelly each tallied a sacrifice fly and freshman designated hitter Adam Brett Walker drove in a run with a grounder to second.
The Rattlers cut the deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the first when a run scored on a throwing error off a double-steal.
FAMU cut the margin to 3-2 in the bottom of the second when Daniel Lee hit an RBI single through the right side.
JU increased the lead to 6-2 in the third when sophomore third baseman Jimmy Howick hit a sacrifice fly, Swenson hit an RBI double to right center and Abis hit an RBI single to shallow center.
The Rattlers cut the margin to 6-3 in the bottom of the third when Scott Sheplak hit an RBI single to left center.
The Dolphins increased the lead to 8-3 in the fourth when Gulbransen hit a solo homer to right and Walker drove in a run with an infield single to second.
FAMU cut it to 8-5 in the bottom of the fourth when Evans hit a two-run homer to left field.
JU made it 10-5 in the fifth when Gulbransen hit an RBI single through the right side and a run scored on fielding error.
The Rattlers cut the deficit to 10-7 in the bottom of the seventh when Derrick Shaw hit a two-run homer to left field.
The Dolphins made it 11-7 in the eighth when Abis hit a sacrifice fly to left field.
FAMU cut the margin to 11-8 in the bottom of the eighth when John Scott drove in a run with an infield single to second.
