Vanderbilt jumped out to an early 5-1 lead and overshadowed a career-best performance by Jacksonville University goalie Karli Tobin as the 19th-ranked Commodores beat the Dolphins 14-9 in Nashville, Tenn. Sunday.

Vanderbilt’s Kendall Pittinger and Ally Carey put their team out to a 2-0 lead before JU sophomore Brittney Orashen responded with her 17th goal of the season with 14:55 to go in the first half of the non-conference game.

The Commodores (8-7) then scored three more to go up 5-1 and the Dolphins couldn’t quite catch up. JU freshman Holly Ventimiglia and teammate Amanda Hurley each scored before the end of the half and the Dolphins (11-4) trailed 6-3 at the break.

The Dolphins scored twice early in the second half as Morgan Derner and Ali Hoffman connected to pull to within 6-5 but Vanderbilt gradually pulled away.

Derner had two goals for the game and Hoffman had three giving her 50 points on the season. Orashen wound up with a pair of goals, two assists and three ground balls while Ventimiglia added two assists.

Tobin, a junior from Moorestown, N.J., had a career-high 17 saves as she faced 39 shots. It was one of the few times this season JU has been outshot as the Dolphins got off 32.

Senior Jess Hotchkiss had three ground balls and junior Rachel Hannon had two ground balls, two draw controls and three caused turnovers in the loss.

The Dolphins return to action Saturday for their final regular season game and will celebrate Senior Day against Presbyterian. Game time is 1 p.m.
