JU Football Reports Thursday
After a summer to savor the most successful season in school history, the Jacksonville University football team is getting back to work this week.
Both returning players and incoming freshmen report to campus Thursday (Aug. 4) for a day of physicals, orientation and meetings in advance of Friday’s first practice that begins at 3:30 p.m.
“We’re excited to get the players back and get the season going,’’ head coach Kerwin Bell said. “It will be good to get back out on the field.’’
Walter Payton Award candidate senior quarterback Josh McGregor will lead the Dolphins, who finished 10-1 overall and shared the Pioneer Football League championship with Dayton with a perfect 8-0 conference record.
McGregor threw for 3,049 yards and 32 touchdowns last year and holds virtually every significant JU career passing mark including 8,186 yards and 87 touchdowns.
Also returning is wide receiver Josh Philpart, another all-star candidate who caught 48 passes for 800 yards and 12 touchdowns last season. He is the school leader in career receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns and has the single-season record for receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.
After daily single practices the first five days, the Dolphins will move into a limited schedule of two-a-days Wednesday. The team’s first scrimmage is scheduled Sat., Aug. 13.
