Unbeaten Temple ready to test JU women
The JU women’s lacrosse team will face its toughest test since the season opener against Florida when the unbeaten Temple Owls head for D. B. Milne Field Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
The Dolphins, 3-1, have a nine-game home win streak on the line against the Owls (5-0) who are 17th in the country in the LaxPower rating system but are unranked in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association poll. JU is ranked 33rd in the power ratings.
JU, 11th in the country in scoring with a 15.25 goals per game average, is led by a pair of sophomores on the offensive end.
Attackers Jen Cosgrove and Ali Hoffman lead the team in scoring. Cosgrove has 12 goals this season and a five-game scoring streak dating back to the final game of 2011. Hoffman has nine goals.
Junior Rachel Hannon has picked up where she left off last season and has 16 draw controls while sophomore Brittney Orashen has 11. Senior Jess Hotchkiss has picked up 10 ground balls along the way and JU has held opponents to 7.75 goals per game, 13th best in the country.
“This one is going to be tough,’’ Cosgrove said. “We are going to have to come out focused and with our game faces on.’’ Temple, coached by Hall of Famer Bonnie Rosen, has a balanced scoring offense led by senior Stephanie Markunas and junior Stephany Parcell, both of whom have 11 goals on the season. The Owls are 15th in the nation in scoring averaging 14.6 goals per game.
Defensively, goalkeeper Tess Bishop has recorded 33 saves in five games and has a .465 save percentage. Senior Lauren Caminiti has caused five turnovers as the Owls have held opponents to an average of 8.2 goals per game, 16th in the nation.
"Coach Rosen has them playing very well right now and executing,’’ JU coach Mindy McCord said. “They have eight seniors starting and one coming off the bench who plays as much as the others do. I believe they are a top-20 program. We have a high regard for Temple and recognize that this is one of the top teams in the country so far this season and their record reflects that."
The game will be broadcast on asun.tv.
