Women’s tennis competes in three-day Southern Shootout

The JU women’s tennis team saw contributions from both new members and returning players during the three-day Southern Shootout in Atlanta.

Freshman Aline Staudt (Sulzseld, Germany) posted her first win in a Dolphins uniform during the second day, defeating South Alabama’s Aline Vollman, 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 during a Flight 1 match.

Sophomore Natalia Melibeu (Recife, Brazil) posted JU’s only other singles victory in the tournament, beating South Alabama’s Ramona Ghermani, 6-2, 6-2, in a Flight 3 matchup.

Virginia Iwinski (Marietta, Ga.)and Veronique Spencer (Caproel, Ontario), the only two seniors on the JU roster, were teamed for three doubles matches and were credited for a Day 3 victory in the Flight 3 doubles.

Spencer defeated GSU’s Reba Williams, 6-3, 6-0, for a Flight 6 singles win on the opening day.

Georgia State hosted the four-team event that also included Samford, South Alabama and GSU.
