Women's tennis falls to FAU in opener

The Jacksonville University women’s tennis team opened its spring season with a 4-3 loss to Florida Atlantic. Despite losing the overall team match, several Dolphins experienced success Saturday at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex.

Freshman Aline Staudt started her career off on a positive note by outlasting FAU’s Justine Humair 7-5, 2-6, 1-0. Also starting the 2012 season with a win on court two was sophomore Natalia Melibeu. She defeated Cassie Bergeson 7-6, 6-7, 1-0.

The success of Staudt and Melibeu was not confined to just the singles matches as the two paired up to defeat the FAU team of Marlene Ryan and Catalina Ene 8-3.

Another pair of Dolphins was able to win their match as the senior duo of Virginia Iwinski and Veronique Spencer defeated Erika Mrazkova and Natasha Phillips 8-4. The win secured the doubles point for the Dolphins.

The Dolphins took the early lead, winning the doubles point but dropped four out of six singles matches to lose 4-3. The team returns to the court Sunday when they host Savannah State at 1:00pm.
