JU tennis teams narrowly lose to Eastern Kentucky
The Jacksonville University men’s and women’s tennis teams both lost 4-3 heartbreakers to the Eastern Kentucky Colonels on Wednesday afternoon in Jacksonville. Both teams won the doubles portion of the match, then could only manage two singles victories apiece to fall 4-3 in the overall team match. JU freshman Aline Staudt bounced back after suffering her first loss of the year by winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. She is now 7-1 in her singles career this season. Staudt and teammate Djessika Bezerra won their doubles match 8-6. The other singles victory for the women’s team came at the hands of Harjit Gosal. She handled her opponent 6-1, 7-6. Gosal and Dolphin Veronique Spencer beat the Colonel opposition in their doubles match 8-6. On the men’s side, Fernando Banos Lopez and Larry Condez were victorious in their individual matches. Banos Lopez took down his opponent in straight sets winning 6-4, 6-2. Condez had a tough match on his hands but eventually prevailed in three sets winning 6-4, 6-7, 6-4. The win marked Condez’s third of the year. He and junior Jose Fantova teamed up to win their doubles match 8-4. “These were both really tough matches today that came down to the final match on,” said Dolphin head coach Justin Miles. “I told the kids I just wanted them to compete and fight hard and they did this. If every single player commits to doing this every match then we will be a tough team to beat as the season goes on. “ The men’s (2-6) and women’s (2-5) teams both return to action on March 11th when they host Troy State at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex.
