Dolphin’s season comes to a close in A-Sun Championships

The Jacksonville University women’s tennis team fell 4-2 to Florida Gulf Coast in the first round of the Atlantic Sun Women’s Tennis Championships in Johnson City, Tennessee.  The sixth seeded Dolphins fell to the third seed Eagles for the second time this season.

A-Sun All-Freshman honoree Aline Staudt won for the 13th time this season as she defeated FGCU’s number one Sarah Means in straight sets 7-5, 6-2.  Staudt had a brilliant freshman season for the Dolphins playing every match as the number one and finishing with a 13-7 individual record.

Staudt and Atlantic Sun Second Team All-Conference selection Natalia Marques Melibeu were victorious as doubles partners for the tenth time this season as they defeated the number one Eagle pairing 8-4.  Melibeu was not able to finish her singles match as the overall match outcome had already been decided.

JU’s other point came from court six where senior Veronique Spencer got to end her Dolphin career on a high note by defeating Maria Diez 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.  The win was Spencer’s fifth of the season and fourth in conference play.

The Dolphins end the year with a 7-13 record overall and a 4-6 record in Atlantic Sun play.
