Mercer Bears down Dolphins 6-1
MACON, Ga.--The Mercer Bears (23-7, 6-2 ASun) defeated the JU Dolphins (9-18, 2-3 Asun) 6-1 Friday evening at Claude Smith Field in Macon, Ga.
The Bears scored first in the bottom half of the second inning of JU starting pitcher Zach Gordon (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. Petersburg College). The Bears pushed across a run on two hits to take the lead 1-0.
The Dolphins answered back in the top of the fifth. Ethan Loosen (Uniondale, N.Y./FSCJ) ripped his second single of the day to left. He advanced to second on a passed ball. Nate Ricci (Madison, Wis./LaFollette) advanced Loosen to third with a ground out. Drew Luther (Fullerton, Calif./Fullerton College) the laid down a perfect suicide squeeze to knot the score at 1-1.
The Bears answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth and followed up with pair in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-1.
The Bears pushed across an insurance run in the seventh to extend the lead to 6-1.
Gordon (2-5) was tagged with the loss after pitching 5 1/3 innings allowing five runs on nine hits.
