Wildcats beat Dolphins 5-3 in Tuesday night action
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Bethune Cookman Wildcats (20-17) defeated the JU Dolphins (11-22) by a score of 5-3 at John Sessions Stadium.
The Wildcats jumped on the board early with a pair of runs off of JU starting pitcher Wes Torrez (Naperville, Ill./Johnson County CC). Bethune Cookman scored two runs in the top half of the first on three hits to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
The Dolphins answered back in the bottom of the first. Dylan Dillard (Kissimmee, Fla./Osceola) led off with a single and then stole second. Jake Huxtable (Winter Springs, Fla./Santa Fe College) followed with a walk and Nathan Koslowski (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) reached on an infield single. Dillard then scored on an RBI groundout by Alex McRae (West Allis, Wis./New Berlin Eisenhower) to make it 2-1.
The Wildcats would answer with three runs in the top of the third on three hits. The Dolphins limited the damage when left fielder Dillard retired a runner at the plate to end the inning to keep the score at 5-1.
The Dolphins would add a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth. Pinch hitter Josh Baker (Sussex, Wis./University School) led off with a walk. Scott Schaub (Ocala, Fla./College of Central Florida) then walked. Both runners then advanced on a wild pitch. Ethan Loosen (Uniondale, N.Y./FSCJ) singled to center scoring both Dolphins and making it 5-3.
That is as close as it would get. Wes Torrez (1-2) pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing five runs on five hits in being handed his second loss of the year.
