Eagles Defeat Dolphins 11-1 in Game One of Series

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The JU Dolphins (14-30, 7-12 A-Sun) and the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles (28-16,12-7 A-Sun) squared off in Atlantic Sun action at Swanson Stadium on the campus of FGCU.

The Eagles started out quickly. The first three batters reached on singles off starting pitcher Corben Madden (Orlando, Fla./Seminole St. College). The senior left-hander struggled with his control early allowing a walk and a hit by pitch before being replaced by Jeff Tanner (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) The Eagles scored three runs in the inning to go up 3-0.

The Eagles kept the pressure on adding five more runs on five hits in the bottom half of the fourth inning to increase the lead to 8-0.

The Dolphins added a run in the top half of the sixth. Ethan Loosen (Uniondale, N.Y./FSCJ) led off with a single and went to second on a throwing error. Following a balk Zachary Houck (Orange Park, Fla./Eagles View Academy) singled scoring Loosen from third easily to make it 8-1.

The Eagles added three runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning on two hits and trio of walks allowed by the Dolphins to round out the scoring at 11-1.

The Dolphins were led offensively by Drew Luther (Fullerton, Calif./Fullerton College) and Jake Huxtable (Winter Springs, Fla./Santa Fe College). The pair both ended the night with a pair of singles each.

The Eagles sent 2012 Atlantic Sun Conference pitcher of the year Ricky Knapp (8-2) to the hill and the right-hander kept the Dolphins off stride scattering seven hits while striking out four while lowering his ERA 1.68 in the win.

Madden (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing three runs in the top half of the first inning.
