Dolphins End Season With 11-4 Loss at ETSU
JOHNSON CITY, TN.- The East Tennessee State University Buccaneers (32-22,17-10 A-Sun) defeated the JU Dolphins (17-38, 8-19 A-Sun) 11-4 in Atlantic Sun Conference action at Thomas Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Dolphins made it 1-0 in the top half of the first inning. Zachary Houck (Orange Park, Fla./Eagles View Academy) led off with a walk. Drew Luther (Fullerton, Calif./Fullerton College) followed with a single advancing Houck to third. Houck then scored on a ground ball double play by Ethan Loosen (Uniondale, N.Y./FSCJ). Brady North (Tampa, Fla./Hillsboro CC) reached on a bases empty double then was stranded at second ending the inning.
The Bucs knotted it at 1-1 when their designated hitter Kevin Phillips homered to left field in the bottom half of the second inning.
The Dolphins pushed across run in the top half of the third inning. Houck reached on a one out walk and advanced to second on a ground out. Houck then stole third and scored easily on a Loosen double down the left field line making it 2-1 Dolphins.
The Bucs added a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning on a single, a double and a costly Dolphin throwing error to take the lead 3-2.
The Dolphins tied it up in the top half of the fifth. Houck reached on a one out error and then stole second. Houck then advanced to third on groundout. Loosen then reached on an RBI single tying it at 3-3.
ETSU sent fourteen men to the plate in the bottom half of the sixth inning increasing the lead to 11-3.
Nathan Koslowski (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) led off the ninth with a triple down the left field line and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kris Molter (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) to make it 11-4.
The Dolphins were led offensive by Loosen who had three hits on the day. The loss was charged to Alex McRae (West Allis, Wis./New Berlin Eisenhower). McRae (3-8) pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing eight hits and five runs (four earned).
The loss combined with the USC Upstate win over UNF eliminated the Dolphins from A-Sun Tournament play.
