Sand Volleyball places second at Fiesta on Siesta Key
Three pairs reached the gold round to lead the JU sand volleyball team to a second-place finish at the Fiesta on Siesta Key Tournament Saturday in Siesta Key, Fla.
Florida State won the competition with 162 points followed by the Dolphins at 141 points. College of Charleston (130), Webber International (125) and Louisiana-Monroe (119) rounded out the top five finishers. Tulane, Stetson, UCF and Florida Gulf Coast made up the rest up the spots.
“This was a great weekend for our school,” JU head coach Michelle Collier said. “We had three teams advance to the gold round and pulled some significant wins against in-state rivals like Florida State, Miami, FIU, and South Florida. I am proud of how our season has progressed and how the team has put on the work to get better. It was a beautiful, windy, Saturday at Siesta Key and we came home very satisfied with our performance.”
Freshman Sammie Strausbaugh and senior Kathryn Kane along with sophomore Kendall Courtney and freshman Cari Whitmire each made the gold round and finished tied for fifth overall in pairs. Kane and Strausbaugh tallied a 5-1 record, including pulling a victory over FSU.
Junior Nicole Teplitz and sophomore Niatha Cullen also made the gold round for the Dolphins and finished 17th overall.
JU’s sophomore Alyssa Robertson and freshman Chelsea Sanderson and sophomore Kylie Jacob and freshman Jenna Orner all reached the silver round during the tourney.
The Dolphins compete Friday in the inaugural A-Sun Sand Volleyball Championships at JU. Fans can watch the competition this weekend at the Dolphin Beach Volleyball Complex near John Sessions Stadium.
