Men’s golf tied for sixth at the Atlantic Sun Championship
Freshmen Nick Torrance and Brett McKinnon each carded a three-over par, 75, to lead the Jacksonville men’s golf team to a tie for sixth after the first round of the 2012 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship.
Played on the par-72 Legends Course at Chateau Elan, the Dolphins carded a 15-over par, 303, and sit 16 shots behind tournament leader UNF. UNF’s Sean Dale and ETSU’s Rhys Enoch are tied for the individual lead at four-under par.
JU is tied with Mercer for sixth and is four shots behind USC Upstate for fifth.
“We left a few shots out there today,” said JU head coach Mike Blackburn. “We had a couple of good rounds going, but couldn’t finish them off. Tomorrow is moving day and the guys are looking forward to going back out there.”
The Dolphins freshmen duo is tied for 19th, each finding a different route to the score.
McKinnon got off to a fast start – making the turn at two-under par thanks to birdies at the par-4 13th and the par-4 18th. His back nine was more difficult, with five bogeys marring the scorecard to finish with a 75.
Torrance meanwhile got off to a slow start – picking up four bogeys on the first 17 holes. A birdie on the par-5 ninth ended his round on a high note and got him in at three-over par.
Bobby Fredeking carded a four-over par 76, with three birdies, to tie for 23rd. Jamey Salmon ended his round with a birdie on the par-5 ninth to finish with a five-over par, 77, to tie for 26th. Will Braude shot an 83 and is tied for 48th.
The Dolphins tee off in the second round on Tuesday morning starting at 8:45 a.m.
