Men get five firsts in MAAC races
The JU men’s rowing team took five firsts Saturday on its way to a second-place finish in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rowing championships.

The Dolphins, competing in their first-ever MAAC championships, swept the Varsity 8 races and the 4s at Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J.

The Varsity 8 with Andrew Soloway at coxswain and his crew of Matt Outlaw, Scott DelVecchio, Andy Davis, Greg VanOekel, Bernard Vingilis, Jeremy Sobiech, Brian Cosmillo and Chase Rowe covered the 2,000-meter course 6:08.5 to beat Marist by nearly four seconds. Iona, Fairfield and Canisius rounded out the field.

Coxswain Tom Richards and his crew of Preston Weinard, Andrew Bechtold, Tim Easterling, Jared Low, Chris Ottie, Shane Kennedy, Brian Tye and Sean Carney took the second Varsity 8 win in 6:11.1 which beat Marist’s 6:17.5 finish. Iona was third and Fairfield fourth.

The Varsity 4 boat with Ben Hayes, DelVecchio, Outlaw, Rowe and Brian Davis on board, led the JU sweep in the 4s competition. The finished in 6:49.4 to beat Marist by 4.1 seconds. Iona finished third followed by Fairfield and Loyola.

The JV4 also beat Marist as Richards, Weinard, Low, Ottie and Jesse Brantman teamed for a run of 7:01.9 to the Red Foxes’ 7:07.9.

The Novice 4, David Waugh, Sobiech, Jacob Strauss, Tim Easterling and Matt Thomas won big as they finished in 6:47.6 to Fairfield’s 7:14. The Marist A boat was third followed by Loyola, Iona, Canisius and Marist B.

The Dolphins’ Novice 8 entry with Waugh at coxswain and Strauss, Stephen Marra, Thomas, Drew Allen, Jacob Motes, Chris Morgan, Shawn Macklefresh and Josh Holt as crew, finished second to Marist in its race. Fairfield was third followed by Loyola and Iona.

The men’s pair team of Troy Troupe and Brantman finished third in its race.

Despite the five wins, Marist was the overall winner with 156 points; JU was second at 143 and Iona third with 123. Fairfield, Loyola, Canisius and Manhattan rounded out the championships.
