Gilmore inducted into Alabama Sports Hall of Fame
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- JU’s Artis Gilmore added another gem to his career ring when he was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame during the weekend.

Gilmore, who led the Dolphins to the 1970-71 NCAA championship game and had a legendary pro career, was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame earlier this year.

He grew up in Chipley, Fla. He played his high school senior season at Dothan's Carver High School after transferring.

"Dothan was 32 miles away," he told the Birmingham News. "In those days, because of the separation of people of different races, we had to go to the commu¬nity center in Dothan for basketball."

The transfer to all-black Carver made sense and led to a college basketball career -- first at Gardner-Webb, then at Jacksonville. While SEC schools were only beginning to consider integration, Jacksonville had already made the move and welcomed him.

Gilmore currently is on staff at JU and works in a consulting capacity with the city of Jacksonville.
