JU baseball junior outfielder Dan Gulbransen has found his way into some good company as he is one of 19 finalists for the “Fan’s Choice Award” presented by TD Ameritrade, announced by Interasport Wednesday.

The “Fan’s Choice Award” goes beyond the stat sheet to honor and recognize college baseball players who are positive role models both on and off the field, exemplifying core values like teamwork and integrity, as well as the drive to win. “The Fan’s Choice Award” is the only college baseball award that is completely determined by fans.

The winner will be determined by fans through Facebook voting and will be honored at the 2012 TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby.

“In 32 years of coaching, I have never had anyone more dedicated to being the total person than Dan Gulbransen,” head coach Terry Alexander said. “Not only is he dedicated to being a great student, but he works even harder at helping his teammates and within the community to make it a better place. He is an All-American person on and off the field. Dan is very deserving to be on this list and we hope he wins it.”

On the field in 2012, Gulbransen ranked second on the team in average (.324), hits (67), triples (1), home runs (6) and RBI (33) to earn first team all-conference honors for the third straight season. He hit .380 in A-Sun play and finished the conference schedule with a 13-game hitting streak, including multiple hits in six of the final seven contests. In the career record book, he is eighth all-time in hits with 230.

“Dan Gulbransen the perfect model for what a student-athlete is all about,” JU associate head coach/recruiting coordinator Tim Montez said. “Not only is he a great baseball player, but his character, integrity, and humbleness is second to none. You throw in the fact that he is a 4.0 student and has never gotten anything below an A dating back through high school is just flat out remarkable.”

Gulbransen posted a 4.0 GPA in exercise science en route to being named the A-Sun baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year on May 22. He has also been named A-Sun All-Academic and to the President’s Honor Roll twice, while earning Capital One Academic All-America third team accolades in 2011.

Gulbransen has already been named Capital One Academic All-District for the second straight year and awaits to see if he is named to the academic All-America team again May 30.

"In 10 years of teaching, I’ve encountered few students of Daniel’s caliber,” JU professor Dr. Elizabeth Gregg said. “Typically student-athletes that excel on the field to the extent that Dan has rarely demonstrate the same type of focus required for excellence in the classroom. Dan is an exception.

“In all interactions, I found Dan to be extremely driven to achieve academic excellence. He attended class religiously and frequently was a leader in class discussions. Dan regularly asked insightful questions that positively contributed to the classroom environment. He was a natural mentor to his younger classmates. By setting an example of excellence, Dan raised the bar for his peers. I cannot imagine an individual more deserving of such an award as Dan Gulbransen.”
