The Jacksonville University men’s soccer team fell 2-1 to USF Tuesday night in Tampa. Freshman Gavin Craig scored the lone JU goal.
The Bulls jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Sebastien Thuriere was able to get his head on a pass put the ball into the back of the net in the 14th minute. USF scored again in similar fashion when Brenton Griffiths added a header of his own pushing the lead to 2-0.
The Dolphins responded in the second half when Craig scored off the assist from fellow freshman Ivo Lima and Nathan Dalton but could not add any more goals as they managed just two shots on the night.
Although the Dolphins could not come away with the win, there were many positives to be taken away from the match.
"I was proud of the effort the guys made tonight against one of the best teams in the country," said head coach Ryan Pratt. "For only being six days into preseason, I thought we continued to make good progress towards being the type of team we want to become. In the first half we were under pressure quite a bit but we made some simple adjustments at halftime and continued to work hard. We pressed more intelligently and continued to try to put the ball on the ground playing out of their pressure. I was happy with the growth I saw out of our team tonight."
In total, 22 of the Dolphin’s 27 players saw action in the exhibition.
JU returns to action this Friday when they host Thomas for another match at the Ashley Sports Complex scheduled to begin at 5:30 pm.
