Late goal dooms Dolphins
After scoring a game winning goal with a minute left in double overtime on Friday night, the JU women’s soccer team was dealt a dose of their own medicine as Florida International University was able to score in the 89th minute to defeat the Dolphins 2-1 Sunday afternoon.
The Dolphins found themselves in a hole quickly as the Panthers took the early lead off of a penalty kick in the third minute.
JU was able to respond with the equalizer in the 22nd minute when freshman Sarah Moghadas scored her first career goal. Junior Raquel Weckhurst served a ball in off of a corner in which Jessica Cataldo-Ramirez flicked to Moghadas who then found the back of the net.
The game remained tied and seemed headed towards overtime when the Panthers were able to break through and get the go-ahead goal with 31 seconds remaining in regulation.
“This was a tough one to give up a goal in the 89th minute,” said Dolphin head coach Brian Copham. “I was very proud of our reaction in the first half after being down early. We are just going to have to work harder to ensure that we play the way that we want to play.”
The loss moves the Dolphins to 1-1 on the season. They will play their third road game in a row when they travel to Columbia, S.C. to take on South Carolina Aug. 26 at 1 p.m.
