The two goal lead that the Dolphins spotted Siena on Sunday afternoon at the Ashley Sports Complex was too much to overcome as JU fell to the Saints 2-1 in the final game of the Mike Gibbs Memorial Tournament.
The Saints (1-1-0) got on the board in the first half with a great individual effort by Sindre Ek. He alertly intercepted a pass leaving him with a one on one situation with Dolphin goal keeper Gavin Carlin. Ek chipped the ball up over Carlin and into the back of the net for the first goal of the game.
With the 1-0 lead, Siena seemed content to hold back and try to preserve the lead instead of attacking. The strategy was ramped up even more after a Saint was given a red card for talking to the referee leaving Siena down a man for most of the second half.
In one of the rare attacks by the Saints in the second half, they were able to score another goal widening the margin to two. In the 64th minute James Beeston dropped off a pass to Tom Allen in the box who placed the ball in the side of the net for the Saint’s second goal on the day.
The Dolphins were able to later respond and score their first goal of the season in the 85th minute. Matheus Saroli’s shot attempt was stopped, but Nick Rodriguez was there for the rebound and hammered it home cutting the lead in half.
Despite a furious attempt and dominating the possession, the Dolphins could not find the equalizer. JU held a 14-7 shot advantage but could not seem to really pressure Saint goal keeper Damian Liesemann.
The loss drops the Dolphins to 0-2-0 on the season. They return to action Friday, August 31 when they host Florida Atlantic.
