Volleyball shut out by UCF, 3-0
UCF dispatched the JU volleyball team in three sets (14-25, 15-25, 15-25) Friday night to wrap the first day the Holiday Inn Select/UCF classic.
Angelica Crump posted nine kills, while Tory McCutcheon tallied eight kills to lead the Knights (2-3) to their second win of the year.
The Dolphins (0-5) never recovered from their earlier loss to Liberty after finishing the match with a .010 hitting percentage (27-26-96). Freshman Sammie Strausbaugh was the only Dolphin without a bad hitting percentage by recording 15 kills in 27 attempts (.519). Junior Kendall Courtney had 21 assists for JU.
“This was a tough day for us,” JU head coach Michelle Collier said. “We couldn’t shake our bad finish from earlier in the day. We will put this behind us and look to come out stronger tomorrow against Columbia.”
In the first set, the Dolphins closed an early deficit to 9-5 on a block from Courtney and senior Alison Loeppky. Junior Alyssa Robertson cut the gap to 15-10 on a kill, but the Knights ended the set on a 10-4 run to take a 1-0 lead.
In the second set, the Knights built a 10-5 advantage on consecutive attack errors. A Strausbaugh kill made it a 12-8 JU deficit before UCF capped an 8-1 run on two more attack errors. An ace by Dani Harrison and another error helped the Knights take the set.
In the third set, sophomore Taylor Nyquist recorded a kill to bring the Dolphins within five early at 11-6. The Knights built a nine-point lead before wrapping the match on a 9-5 run for the win.
