Men’s golf opens fall season at Raines Development Group Intercollegiate
After two weeks of intense qualifying, the Jacksonville University men’s golf team opens its fall campaign on Monday at the Raines Development Group Intercollegiate.
Hosted by Francis Marion University, the Dolphins look to get into contention with a veteran group that includes a new face.
“We’ve had a good start to our fall season and some great golf played in qualifying,” said JU head coach Mike Blackburn. “Now the rounds count in tournament and this is great event for us to start the season.”
JU’s lineup features seniors Jamey Salmon and Trey Douglas, with junior Dillon Batsel and sophomore Brett McKinnon. The new face is Colin Monagle, a sophomore newcomer who has been a member of the JU baseball team the past two years and joined the team this fall after a solid summer of tournament golf.
“Colin has been a great addition to the team,” Blackburn said. “He had some good finishes in tournaments this summer and is playing with a great deal of confidence. I look forward to seeing him continue to improve over the course of his career.”
Salmon put together an exceptional summer as well, advancing to the U.S. Amateur for the first time while making it to the semifinals in the Jacksonville Area Golf Association match play championship.
McKinnon is coming off a solid freshman season and great rounds in qualifying to earn the No. 2 spot in the lineup this week. Batsel, using a phenomenal short game, chipped in twice – on the final hole of qualifying and in the first playoff hole, to make the travel squad.
