Weckhurst fuels Dolphin win
Raquel Weckhurst scored two of the Dolphins’ three goals in the team’s 3-0 win over Atlantic Sun opponent Stetson on Friday night in Jacksonville. With the win, the Dolphins remain undefeated in conference play.
Weckhurst put the Dolphins up early and gave them a lead that they would not relinquish. In the fourth minute, sophomore defender Miranda Fyfe played a perfect pass from midfield over the Stetson defender’s head to the streaking Weckhurst who then chipped a ball up over the keeper and into the net.
The Dolphins were not done scoring in the opening period as they were able to double their lead with four seconds remaining in the half. Senior Emily Culbreth found freshman forward Ashley Poirier in the center of the box. Poirier curled a shot away from the keeper and into the corner of the goal for her first score of her Dolphin career.
Jacksonville controlled the ball for much of the second half and was able to tack on another goal in the game’s final closing minutes. Weckhurst took a pass from Fyfe yet again and calmly placed a ball into the corner of the net for her second goal on the night.
"I have to give Raquel credit because it’s been a long time coming for her,” said Dolphin head coach Brian Copham. “I’m glad to see Raquel rewarded for her tireless work and energy out on the field. We came out with a great intensity at home and overall played well from start to finish.”
JU outshot the Hatters 25 to 11 and narrowly missed scoring several more goals as multiple shots ricocheted off the posts and crossbar including two of Weckhurt’s shots.
The Dolphins (6-4-2, 3-0-1 A-Sun) will look to stay unbeaten in the Atlantic Sun when they return to the Ashley Sports Complex on Sunday to take on the first place FGCU Eagles at 2:00 p.m.
