After a solid 2011-12 campaign, JU women’s basketball junior forward Jade Cargill was voted to the A-Sun preseason all-conference team released Thursday by the league office.

Cargill, a former guard, got comfortable in her post role as a sophomore by ranking first on the team in rebounding (8.3), second in steals (57) and third in scoring (9.8). She had nine double-doubles last season to move into fourth all-time. She also recorded three 20-point scoring efforts and 10 double-digit rebound games.

The Vero Beach, Fla., native is the first Dolphin to make the preseason all-conference since Courtney Jackson prior to the 2009-10 season.

“We are happy for Jade that she is being recognized as one of the top players in our conference,” JU head coach Jill Dunn said. “She had a good season last year and we are expecting an even better season this year.”

As a team, the Dolphins were voted to place fifth each edition of the preseason polls.

In the coaches poll, Stetson edged out Florida Gulf Coast for the top spot with 98 points and eight-place votes as well as earning the nod as the preseason tournament title winner. The defending champion Eagles took second with 89 points and two first-place votes. North Florida (68), East Tennessee State (64) and JU (64) rounded out the top five, while Kennesaw State, Northern Kentucky, USC Upstate, Lipscomb and Mercer made up the rest of the poll.

In the media poll, FGCU was picked first with 181 points (14 first-place votes) and selected as the tournament champion. Stetson took second with 175 points and five first-place votes. North Florida (107), ETSU (103) and JU (103) followed in the same order as the coaches poll. USC Upstate, Northern Kentucky, Mercer and Lipscomb closed up the group.

“We are excited about this team,” Dunn said. “We are going to continue to work hard to reach our goals. We all know it is not where we are picked in preseason but where we finish in March.”

The Dolphins will face Columbus State in an exhibition contest Nov. 4 in Swisher Gymnasium. They open the season Nov. 9 at home against Florida A&M with a special 11:30 a.m. tipoff.
