Dolphins win key late season matchup
Two first half goals propelled the Jacksonville University women’s soccer team to a 2-1 win over the East Tennessee State Buccaneers Friday night at the Ashley Sports Complex.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Bassett looked like the dynamic player that she was as a freshman when she led the team in scoring, contributing on both of the Dolphin scores with a goal and an assist.
JU struck first in the 25th minute when Bassett was able to get her second goal of the season. Junior Raquel Weckhurst sent a hard, line drive pass into the box that Bassett got her head on and sent past the outstretched ETSU goal keeper putting the Dolphins up 1-0.
Exactly 13 minutes later the Dolphin offense would strike again. Bassett passed the ball off to sophomore defender Miranda Fyfe who blasted a shot from well beyond the box and into the back of the net for her second goal in 2012.
The Dolphins would keep the pressure on the Bucs in the second half, outshooting them 13-9 in the period and 23-13 overall.
Dolphin goal keeper Jill D’Amico came up with several big saves and ended up with six on the night.
The Bucs tried to make some noise late as the A-Sun’s leading scorer Ramey Kerns scored off of a corner kick with less than four minutes left in the second half, however the Dolphins were able to regroup and hold on for the win.
“I thought we came out and played some really good soccer tonight,” said head coach Brian Copham. “We created a lot of great chances and looked really good as a team. We got a lot of people’s best effort of the season which is what you want at this point in the year.”
With the win, the Dolphins move to 4-2-2 in the conference and 7-6-3 overall on the season. The Dolphins will conclude their regular season on Sunday as they host USC Upstate at 2:00 p.m. The game will also be the last regular season home game for the six seniors on the team and they will be recognized before the start of the game.
