Volleyball starts key road trip Friday
These next two weeks will be the crucial for the JU volleyball team’s postseason plans as they prep for a four-match road trip starting Friday in Macon, Ga.

The Dolphins (5-20, 3-9 A-Sun) will play three teams during the stretch they are two wins behind for one of the remaining seeds into the A-Sun Tournament.

JU opens the trip with Mercer before playing at Kennesaw State on Saturday. After a tough matchup at Florida Gulf Coast (Oct. 30), the Dolphins will end the trip in town against cross-town rival North Florida Nov. 3.

“We are excited for this weekend,” JU head coach Michelle Collier said. “It is going to be great competition and our team is looking forward to it. We have had some great team performances in the last three matches and our goal is to maintain the high level of execution that we have been showing lately. It will be a battle, and we will go out there and give it our best shot!”

The Dolphins finally got over the hump Tuesday and broke a four-match skid with a 3-0 win against Stetson in Swisher Gymnasium.

Freshman Sammie Strausbaugh paced the Dolphins offense with 13 kills, while Jacob tallied 11 kills and five blocks. Jacob has had at least seven kills and four blocks in six of the last seven matches.

JU defense also came to play by holding the Hatters a .031 hitting percentage (23-20-98) and recording 16 blocks.

The Bears and Owls have each lost four of their last six matches entering the weekend. Both of their most recent wins came against Stetson.

In their first meeting with JU, the Owls earned a five-set win in Swisher Oct. 5. The Dolphins bounced back the next day by winning a five-set match against Mercer.

The Dolphins double-doubles in the Mercer win from Strausbaugh (14 kills, 19 digs) and junior Kendall Courtney (50 assists, 18 digs). Strausbaugh also had four aces, while senior Alison Loeppky added 11 kills. Freshman Gabriela Roman and junior Alyssa Robertson each chipped in with 10 kills.
