Dolphins fall in double overtime

JACKSONVILLE, FL--- In what has become a common theme in 2012, the JU men’s soccer team gave up a late goal Friday night in Jacksonville to fall to Lipscomb 1-0 in the second overtime period in the Dolphins final home game of the season.

In a match where neither team could create real threatening opportunities, the Bisons were able to finally crack through and score the decisive goal.

The Dolphins (3-12-1, 2-5-0 A-Sun) were outshot 23-13 on the night including 8-1 in the two overtime periods.  Jacksonville’s defense began to unravel in the extra time as Lipscomb was able to fire multiple shots at goal that just missed.

After 100 minutes of scoreless play, the Bisons would strike the game winner just 14 seconds into the second period of overtime.

The ball entered the box and Lipscomb’s Reece Holcombe fired a shot that was blocked.  Troy Barr found himself in the right place at the right time as he corralled the rebound and fired a shot passed the outstretched hands of Dolphin goal keeper Gavin Carlin.

In what was a fairly even match, the Dolphins just could not find the right combination of passes and shots to break through and score a goal.  The Dolphins came into the match having scored at least a goal in their last five matches and eight of their last nine.

Lipscomb now vaults ahead of the Dolphins in the A-Sun standings with two wins and a tie as the Dolphins’ conference record sits at 2-5-0 and leaves them on the outside looking in in terms of qualifying for the conference tournament.

The Dolphins will look to get back into the top six when they take on cross-town rival UNF Nov. 3 for a River City Rumble point and the regular season finale.
