The JU women’s basketball team will kick off its 14th season against Florida A&M Friday with a special 11:30 a.m. start in Swisher Gymnasium.

The Dolphins, picked fifth in the A-Sun preseason polls, will host the Lady Rattlers in the first home game for the second straight season.

“It is an exciting time of the year,” JU head coach Jill Dunn said. “We open up our season against a very good FAMU team. They are athletic, work hard and are well coached. They have some key players returning from last year’s 22-8 season so it will be a great challenge for us.”

The Dolphins enter Friday’s contest following a 76-71 win over Columbus State in exhibition action at home Sunday.

JU set up the win by shooting better than 40 percent in second half from the floor (15-31, 48.4), three-point line (4-5, 80.0) and charity stripe (13-18, 72.2).

Junior Jade Cargill scored 14 of her 22 points in the second half and had 15 rebounds for the Dolphins. Junior Stephanie Edwards added 14 points, while senior Tracie Sneed and freshman Queen Alford each finished with 13 points. Freshman Briona Brown scored nine points and had four assists to help the cause.

Overall, JU will return six players from the 2011-12 squad that reached the A-Sun semifinals.

Last season, the Lady Rattlers posted a 22-8 record and a 14-2 mark in MEAC play. They had their NCAA Tournament dreams dashed by falling in the conference title game to Howard.

In the all-time series, Florida A&M holds a 2-1 edge, including last year’s 78-59 win.

JU hasn’t fared well in opening games with a 4-9 all-time record and a 2-7 under Dunn. The last win to open a season was against Georgia Southern, 72-58, on Nov. 12, 2007.
