The JU volleyball team continued to stay alive for an A-Sun Tournament berth after a 3-2 win (18-25, 26-24, 19-25, 25-21, 15-10) over USC Upstate Friday night at Swisher Gymnasium.

The Dolphins (9-22, 6-11 A-Sun) got 20 kills and 13 digs from freshman Sammie Strausbaugh to keep their postseason chances going for one more day. Junior Kylie Jacob added 10 kills and nine blocks, while junior Alyssa Robertson finished with nine kills.

“We played really well tonight,” JU head coach Michelle Collier said. “Even though USC Upstate had us on the ropes, our girls kept their composure and pulled out the win. We need another good effort tomorrow to hopefully snag a tournament berth.”

Kayla Eversgeerd recorded 18 kills to lead the Spartans (12-18, 6-11) offense. Kayla McAvoy finished with 15 kills and Emily Bingham added 10 kills in the loss.

After winning two of the first three sets, USC Upstate opened with fourth set with a 10-6 advantage from a JU error. The Dolphin tied it at 10 on consecutive aces from Strausbaugh. The teams traded leads until a Jacob kill helped the Dolphins gain a 21-17 advantage. The Spartans pulled within two twice before kills by Robertson and Strausbaugh forced a fifth set.

In the fifth set, the Dolphins opened with a 7-5 lead from a Robertson kill. USC Upstate tied it at nine on a JU service error. A kill by Strausbaugh and a block from Jacob and freshman Emily Laskelle helped the Dolphins gain an 11-9 lead. USC Upstate took the next point, but Laskelle got three of the next four points on kills to secure the win.

The Dolphins wrap the home schedule tomorrow against East Tennessee State in Swisher Gymnasium at 5 p.m.
