JU women’s basketball player Briona Brown is off to a tremendous start in her freshman season for the Dolphins, so much so she has been named the Atlantic Sun Newcomer of the Week for the second time in this young season.
Because of her effort, Brown, is this week’s Sodexo Student-Athlete of the Week.
The Haines City, Fla., native posted 15 points (6-11 FG) and two blocks in contest against Mercer on Jan. 12. Last night, she recorded 12 points, nine boards and two steals against Kennesaw State to help JU snap a three-game losing streak.
“We are excited Briona is getting recognized for her consistent play,” JU head coach Jill Dunn said. “She has been a huge spark for us and we look forward to her continued improvement as the year progresses.”
Brown is currently the highest scoring freshman in the A-Sun with a 10.5 average. She is second on the team in rebounds (6.0) and steals (22). Brown also has 19 blocks which is first on the squad and fourth in the league.
Brown earned her first newcomer honor on Nov. 27 after scoring 24 points in the win against Vermont (Nov. 21) and recording nine points and nine boards at Jacksonville State (Nov. 25).
