The Jacksonville University softball team christened the FAU Classic with a 5-1 win against Harvard in the tourney opener Friday morning.

Freshman Victoria Brown and sophomore Ashley Simon each hit a home run to lead the Dolphins (11-4) to their third straight win. Brown (4-1) picked up the win in the circle after allowing a run on six hits and fanning four in seven innings of work.

“This was a good way to start the day,” JU head coach Ali Higgs said. “It took us a little bit to get going, but we played well. VB had a good outing to kick off the day. We hope to continue this momentum against Eastern Michigan later today.”

Simon finished her day with three RBI, while senior Sarah Simon scored twice in the victory.

Shelbi Olson went 2-for-3 to pace the Crimson (0-1) in their first game of the season. Katherine Lantz had a solo homer for the lone Harvard run.

Crimson starter Morgan Groom (0-1) took the loss by surrendering three runs on three hits in four innings of work.

With two outs in the JU third inning, Brown broke up a hitless contest with a home run for the 1-0 advantage.

Freshman Emily Sanchez started the fourth inning with a single, while Sarah Simon followed with a walk. Ashley Simon singled in the next at-bat to score Sanchez and move Simon to third. Junior Karson Tuck put the Dolphins up 3-0 in the following at-bat with a sacrifice fly to score Simon.

Harvard broke up Brown’s no-hit bid in the fifth with a led off single by Stephanie Regan. Brown walked Adrienne Hume, but followed with two quick outs. The Crimson got an infield single to load the bases before Brown induced a ground out from Andrea Del Conte to quash the threat.

Lantz led off the sixth inning with a home run, while Kasey Lange had a one-out double. Brown got a fly out and a ground out to end the frame.

Ashley Simon added some insurance for JU in the bottom of the inning with two-run homer for a 5-1 advantage. Brown pitched a scoreless seventh to secure the win.
