JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – With less than a minute remaining in fourth quarter, Ari Waffle took a pass from James Trentini and fired the game winning shot past High Point’s goal keeper to give the Dolphins a 9-8 lead and their first win of the 2013 season.
After scoring the game’s first goal, the Dolphins (1-2) watched as High Point (1-5) rallied to score five out of the next six goals and take a 5-2 lead into halftime.
The deficit was quickly erased as JU came out in the third quarter and reeled off four unanswered goals to recapture the lead.
Less than a minute into the second half, the Dolphins took advantage of a High Point penalty and cut the Panther lead to 5-3 when David Goldman scored the man-up goal off an assist from Chase Miller.
The Dolphins scored their second goal of the half less than a minute later when Waffle scooped up a ground ball in front of the goal after TJ Kenary’s shot was saved and flicked it past the keeper to leave JU trailing just one goal.
After Kenary later tied the game at five all, Conor Igoe scored his second goal of the season to put JU in the lead for the first time since the opening minutes of the game.
High Point finally responded and got its first goal of the second half with eight seconds left in the third to send the game to the fourth quarter knotted up at six.
The Dolphins added two goals from Quint Miller and Trentini to go up 8-6 and looked as if they were well on their way the victory but Highpoint wasn’t done battling.
The Panthers strung together two straight goals to tie the score at eight with the second coming with less than three minutes left in the quarter.
With possession of the ball near the High Point goal, the Dolphins called timeout with 1:20 remaining regulation to setup the game winning goal.
As less than 30 seconds remained, Waffle made his move to get in position. Trentini fired a pass from behind the goal to the cutting Waffle who found the back of the net to put JU up 9-8.
JU won the ensuing faceoff and ran out the clock to get the hard earned win.
The Dolphins will look to build on the win and keep the momentum rolling as they return to D.B. Milne Field March 9 to host Marquette.
