FELLSMERE, Fla. – The JU women’s rowing team opened up its spring schedule Saturday, competing against Florida Tech in a dual meet at Canal 54 in Fellsmere, Fla.
The Varsity 8 #1 boat beat the #2 JU boat and the Florida Tech boat to win the event.
“I thought all of the boats did a pretty good job today of applying the skills we have been working on,” said JU Rowing Director and women’s head coach Jim Mitchell. “The Varsity 8 had a good first race, and they stuck to the race plan, even in tough wind conditions. It’s early, and we have a lot of work to do, but the attitude of the team is positive going into the next week of training.”
The winning Varsity 8 boat consisting of Savannah Rice (coxswain), Marry Mosier, Victoria Hernandez, Jules Welch, Whitney Mathews, Abby Sierigk, Cat Plesko, Emily Close, and Jordyn Clary finished in a time of 7:49.9 to edge out Florida Tech by 8.9 seconds and the other JU boat by 37.8 seconds.
The second Varsity 8 boat of Jordan Heylock (coxswain), Cassie MacLellan, Ashley Hirt, Kelly Cleveland, Chassidy White, Jenna Holt, Kacey Talbot, Gabby Roque, and Sydney Warpness finished in a time of 8:27.7.
The Varsity 4 boat of Renee Pharis (coxswain), Ivy Hartley, Rebecca Clark, Blanca Fernandez, and April Beck finished 32.7 seconds behind Florida Tech in a time of 9:35.7.
The women’s rowing team retuns to action March 15 as they travel to Deland, Fla. to take on Stetson in a dual meet.
