Men’s and women’s rowing compete in second regatta of the season

DELAND, Fla— The JU men’s and women’s rowing teams competed in their second races of the season on Friday in Deland, Fla. The multi-team meet consisted of Stetson, the Coast Guard Academy, Temple, and Simmons.

The races took place along a 2000 meter course on a clear day with almost perfect racing conditions.  Each race with the exception of the four person boats was run twice approximately 20 minutes after the completion of the first race.

The Dolphins had three wins on the day as the men’s Novice 8 won both its races and the men’s Varsity 4 won its race.

In the closest race of the day, the men’s Varsity 4 was able to edge Temple by just three seconds to win the event in a time of 7:53.

The men’s Novice 8 won both its races by around 20 seconds each time over the second place team of the Coast Guard Academy.  The Novice 8 finished with times of 7:36 and 7:54 in its two races.

JU’s women’s Varsity 8 finished in third in each of its two races just behind Temple and Simmons and ahead of the Coast Guard Academy and Stetson.  The team of Savannah Rice (coxswain), Mary Mosier, Victoria Hernandez, Jules Welch, Whitney Mathews, Abby Sierigk, Cat Plesko, Emily Close, and Jordyn Clary finished with times of 8:24 and 8:25.
