MACON, Ga.—The JU softball team won the series finale against Mercer on Saturday 11-1 in five innings. The lopsided win finished off the three-game sweep for the Dolphins.
Once again the Dolphins were fueled by dominant pitching and hitting.
The freshman trio of pitchers, Victoria Brown, Cecile Gomez, and Taylor Rossman, combined to strike out five batters and give up just three hits and one run over five innings.
Similarly to yesterday’s games, the Dolphins jumped out to an early lead.
JU was able to score three runs in the top of the first off of Karson Tuck and Meagan Balding bases loaded singles.
The lone Mercer run of the weekend was scored in the bottom of the second when Brown gave up a solo home run over the right field wall to make the game 3-1.
The Dolphins responded in the top of the third with three more runs.
After a walk and a double by Ashley Simon, Tuck tripled to right field to add two runs. Tuck eventually scored on a groundout to put JU up 6-1.
As the Mercer offense was being tamed, the Dolphins put the game out of reach in the fourth with four more runs off of a sacrifice fly and a couple of RBI singles.
With the score 10-1 in the top of the fifth, JU hit its fifth home run of the weekend when Codi Kelly sent a pitch of the left field fence to make it 11-1.
On the weekend the Dolphins (26-10, 8-3 A-Sun) outscored the Bears (21-19, 9-6 A-Sun) 25-1.
The Dolphins will look to keep its five-game winning streak going when it travels to Daytona, Fla. to take on Bethune-Cookman on April 3. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
