First Meeting Between A-Sun Rival Schools Headlines Youth Day For Women’s Lacrosse
Dolphins square-off against in-state and conference for Stetson for the first time
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Stetson and Jacksonville have done battle for many years as conference foes. This Saturday at D.B. Milne Field, the tradition and rivalry expands to include women’s lacrosse as the Dolphins host the Hatters in Stetson’s first Atlantic Sun Conference lacrosse game in school history. Opening draw is set for 3pm.
The Hatters (0-11; 0-0) announced the addition of women’s lacrosse two years ago and have built their program from a school supported club team to their first season of Division I lacrosse this year.
“They are a young team who is well coached and as their young players mature they will be a strong team to contend with. We are grateful to have Florida based universities like Stetson to play and grow the game with.” Said JU Head Coach Mindy McCord.
The Dolphins (8-3; 1-0) are hoping for a result similar to last weekend’s dominate win over Kennesaw State in the A-Sun’s first ever conference game. JU exploded for ten goals in the games opening 8:32 as 15 different player scored for the Dolphins in the 22-2 win.
The game marks the Dolphins fourth annual youth and community day. A free clinic will be offered after the game for area girls lacrosse players to learn from the JU players and coaches. Game posters and autographs will also be provided in a meet and greet format.
“This is what our lives are all about. Sure we love to win and compete, but making a difference and serving others are core tenants of being a JU Dolphin. We want to grow the game where we are and to us growing the game is by leading by example and not just about more television coverage. We have seen area lacrosse grow from just over twenty girls to more than 1,000 in eight years time. Now there are three Division I programs in the state. It means a lot to continue inspiring and providing role models for girls of all ages.” Added McCord.
Following the game, JU prepares for a showdown with No.3 North Carolina in Durham on April 12th.
