Dolphins Falter Against Owls

KENNESAW, Ga.—The JU softball team dropped a pair of games on the road to Kennesaw State Saturday afternoon.

Defense doomed the Dolphins (30-17, 11-10 A-Sun) in game one of the doubleheader.

JU struck first thanks to an RBI double by shortstop Karson Tuck in the top of the first inning.

The Owls (29-17, 13-10 A-Sun) however would retake the lead in the bottom of the third and never relinquish it.

A two RBI triple and an RBI single off of freshman Victoria Brown (9-7) put Kennesaw up 3-1 after three innings.

The final seven runs that the Owls would go on to score would all be unearned due to four Dolphin errors.

Trailing 4-1 in the top of the fifth, the Dolphins cut the lead to just one.

Senior catcher Sarah Simon’s team leading 16th home run left JU trailing 4-3.

The bottom half of the fifth is where the Dolphin defense failed them.

Two errors and three hits equated to five Kennesaw runs to put the Owls up 9-3.

Each team would go on to add a run to bring the game to the final score of 10-4.

Game two proved to be a pitching duel as both teams combined for just eight hits and one run.

Freshman Cecile Gomez (8-1) picked up her first loss of the season despite the strong performance.  She went six innings allowing four hits and just one unearned run.

The game’s lone run was scored in the bottom of the second.  A throwing error allowed a Kennesaw batter to reach base and eventually score off of a double.

The Dolphins could not get their offense going all game long, managing just one hit after the third inning.

Jacksonville will try to snap its seven-game losing streak when it returns to action tomorrow for the series finale that is slated for 1 p.m.
