JU Men Have Strong Day One at SIRA

OAK RIDGE, Tn.—The JU men’s rowing team had a solid first day at the Southeast Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) regatta on Saturday. 

The Dolphins won two heats on the day and two out of their boats qualified for the A final while the third will be the B final. 

The Freshmen 8 of Angelo Santiago (coxswain), Anthony Rzepka, Tom Harrison, Erik Fournier, Billy Macomber, Chris Searcy, Garth Greene, Ellis Harr, and Andrew Stebbins won its first heat of the day in a time of 6:20.90.  They returned for the semifinal and finished in a time of 6:16.10 which was third in their heat and fifth overall.  They will compete in the A final on Sunday.

The Varsity 4 of Maycee Dioneda (coxswain), Sean Carney, Shane Kennedy, Andrew Bechtold, and Bernardas Vingilis also won its opening heat in 7:09.60.  In their semifinal they finished third in a time of 7:07.11.  They qualified for the B final.

The Varsity 8 of David Waugh (coxswain), Scott Del Vecchio, Jared Low, Preston Weinard, Scott Waitley, Nathan Esterline, Jeremy Sobiech, Brian Cosmillo, and Chase Rowe started off its day posting a time of 6:10.10 and finished second in its heat.  They returned in the semifinal to once again finish second, this time clocking in at 6:01.10.  That performance sent them into the A final.

Tomorrow’s finals are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. and continue on throughout the day.
