The Cougars jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead off of Dolphin starting pitcher Wes Torrez (Naperville, Ill./Johnson County CC). The Cougars pushed across two runs on two hits and benefited from two hit batsmen in the bottom half of the first inning.
The Cougars added a run in the bottom half of the second inning on a solo homerun by catcher Ryan Welke to make it 3-0.
The Cougars kept the pressure on adding three more runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning to make it a 6-0 game. The big blow in the inning was a two run homer to right by Brandon Murray.
The Cougars added a three runs in the bottom half of the seventh to stretch the lead to 9-0 off Dolphin reliever Zach Gordon (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. Petersburg College).
The hometown Cougars added a run in the bottom half of the eighth to round out the scoring at 10-0.
The Dolphins threatened in the top half of the ninth. Garrett Ruckel (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) and Braddock Rowe (Jacksonville, Fla./South Georgia College) reached on two out singles and Brady North (Tampa, Fla./Hillsboro CC) was hit by a pitch. Dylan Dillard (Kissimmee, Fla./Osceola) then was retired to end the ball game.
Wes Torrez (1-4) was charged with the loss for the Dolphins. Torrez went 4 1/3 innings allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits while striking out two.
