Freeman, Pierre Advance to Second Day of NCAA Regional

GREENSBORO, N.C.—Seniors Bienna Freeman and Joane Pierre both finished second in their heats in the 800m on Thursday afternoon at the NCAA East Regional to advance to the quarterfinal round.

Freeman, who came into the meet with the fourth fastest time in the region, posted a 2:06.75 in heat 5 to automatically advance to the next round.  The top three finishers from each of the six heats along with the next six fastest times advanced to the quarterfinals.  Pierre was able to log a 2:07.39 in her heat to advance as well.

“Both Joane and Bienna advanced with controlled races expending as little energy as possible,” said JU head coach Ron Grigg.  “To advance in the next round is going to require a much faster effort.”

LaTonya Payne and Kree Clark were also in action Thursday but missed out on advancing.  Payne ran a 1:00.98 in the grueling 400m hurdles and finished just one second off of the quarterfinal qualifiers.  Clark, competing in the discus, fouled on her first two attempts but then recorded a throw of 153-07 in her third and final attempt.  She finished 23rd out of 48 competitors.

“LaTonya and Kree competed hard and had excellent seasons for us this year,” said Grigg.

Joining Freeman and Pierre in competition Friday will be Shanique Walker in the 100m hurdles and Courtney Walker in the 200m.
