JACKSONVILLE, Fla.– Former Jacksonville University standout Russell Knox captured medalist honors at the Rockville, Md. sectional qualifier on Monday to earn a spot in the field for the 2013 U.S. Open Championship on June 13-16 at Merion Golf Club, Ardmore, Pa.

Knox, the 2006 Atlantic Sun Championship runner-up fired a first-round 65 at the Woodmont Country Club. He would finish at 9-under-par 132 to share first place with Adam Hadwin and Randall Hutchison. Knox holds current status on both the PGA Tour and Web.com Tour this season. He will be playing in his first U.S. Open.

A native of Scotland, Knox led Jacksonville to the Atlantic Sun Conference javascript:void(0);title in 2006 and made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2006 and 2007. After his stellar college career, he dominated the NGA Hooters Tour until making the jump to the Nationwide Tour in 2011 where he picked up his first win at the Chiquita Classic.
