Haywood and Dawson have combined to earn the last four A-Sun Newcomer of the Week Awards    

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.
– The play of Jacksonville’s newcomers have been a big part of the Dolphins climb to the upper half of the Atlantic Sun standings and the league has taken notice.  On Tuesday (Feb. 5) JU freshman Jarvis Haywood (Charlotte, N.C.) earned the Dolphins’ fourth consecutive A-Sun Newcomer of the Week Award.

The honor is the second in four weeks for Haywood who averaged 13.5 points, 6.5 rebounds 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals in a 1-1 week for JU.  The 6’5” rookie guard scored nine of his 11 points in the second half in a match-up of first place teams in a 71-70 victory over Stetson on Thursday.  He also contributed seven rebounds, three assists and two steals in win that set up another first place showdown with Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday.  Against FGCU he led JU with 16 points while adding six rebounds in a three-point loss.  

Haywood is one of only three freshmen in the league averaging over 10.0 ppg this season.  He ranks fifth in the A-Sun shooting 77 percent from the foul line.

JU junior Javon Dawson (Cordele, Ga.) was named the Atlantic Sun Newcomer of the Week in each the of the previous two weeks.  

The Dolphins now sit tied for third place in A-Sun at 7-4 heading into a road trip at Mercer on Thursday and at Kennesaw State on Saturday.
