Ziegler earns spot on USILA national scholar team
JU defenseman Jake Ziegler has become the first men’s lacrosse player to win a national award as he has been named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Scholar All-America team.

The award honors players from throughout the nation for excellence in studies and on the field. Ziegler, from Webster, N.Y., graduated in early May with a degree in communications and a 3.678 cumulative grade point average.

A three-year captain who started all 41 games in which he played during his career with the Dolphins, Ziegler this season had 35 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers and was the team’s defensive leader. His 15 caused turnovers led the team in the category.

Earlier, Ziegler was named to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference first team for the second consecutive season.

“This is a great tribute to all the hard work Jake has put in at Jacksonville both on and off the field,’’ coach Guy Van Arsdale said. “He has set the bar high for those who follow him and has demonstrated that excellence can be attained and recognize at Jacksonville University. We are very proud of him. He has been a trail blazer in many ways and is the first JU lacrosse player to receive a national award of this caliber.’’
