Dolphins fall after Norse score late goal

The Jacksonville University men’s soccer team lost 2-1 Sunday afternoon in Jacksonville as Northern Kentucky was able to score the go-ahead goal with less than ten minutes remaining in the second half.

JU jumped out to an early lead scoring the game’s only goal in the first half.  Junior Nick Rodriguez passed a ball to a sliding Matheus Saroli who sent a diagonal shot across the goal and into the back left corner of the net for his fourth goal of the season.

After being shutout in the first half, the Norse would strike early in the second period.  NKU’s Cian McDonald flicked the ball with his heel to Brendan Muprhy at the top of the box.  Murphy took a couple of dribbles to the center of the box and then fired a strike past Dolphin goal keeper Gavin Carlin to tie the game at 1-1.

The two teams would trade shots back and forth until Northern Kentucky was able to crack through and get the game winning goal.  Craig Heard made his way down the far sideline with the ball before stopping and firing a low, line drive shot from well outside the box and into the back of the net.

The Norse kept the pressure on the Dolphin defense all afternoon outshooting JU 19-13.  Carlin kept JU in the match with seven saves including five in the first half.

The Dolphins (2-10-1, 1-3-0 A-Sun) will look to bounce back at home as they host Florida Gulf Coast on October 18 at 7:00 p.m.
